National Public Radio

Years ago, when I was about to finish my master’s degree and then, gulp, have to go make my way again in the real world, I decided that I needed to sell a piece of writing before I left school. I guess I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it before I got out there in the world with both feet.

I wrote this essay, NPR: Hawaiian Graduation, submitted it to NPR’s All Things Considered and they bought it. I voiced it at our local Hawai‘i Public Radio station and it aired nationally. I think that was actually my first professional writing gig. It was a kick.

After that, I wrote and voice two additional commentaries for All Things Considered.

NPR: Oma’s Journal

NPR: Speaking Hawaiian

And then the editor there changed and I never sold another piece there. I did go on to write and air some pieces on Hawai‘i Public Radio, though. It’s something I really enjoy; my journalism degree was actually done with an emphasis in broadcasting. Maybe one day I’ll do something with that again.
