Eric,

Thank you so much for your comment, and I understand your chicken sentiments totally. I just love having chickens. Who knew it would be so fun and satisfying? I had no idea.

Your chickens sound like they're very happy if they're laying that many eggs. We have six hens and are generally getting five eggs per day (sometimes four). They're happy, too.

I am going to check out your book. Thanks for writing!

Hi Leslie!

I just discovered your blog via another Hawai'i blog. Funny to read your post about chickens, because I am a new chicken owner myself. I even made a book about the experience. Check it out: http://redskiesatnight.com/books/chickens-anyone/

Ours have been laying since November last year. I have seven hens (originally eight, but the dog ate one) and we are getting about 5 eggs a day, although sometimes we'll get 7 a day! I just love them and feel great about the way the whole thing feels so sustainable.

My chickens love: bananas, papaya, coqui frogs, mo'os, cockroaches, rice, steamed broccoli, fresh warabi, apple cores, you name it. I don't think we can ever go back to the store bought eggs, the free range ones are so yummy!

I don't know about the cholestrol connection. When we stayed with Liz and Mike they had chickens and we feed them a bunch of our fruit scrapes and such, the chickens favored the coconut the most, leaving all the other stuff until the coconut was gone, then turning to it. I was also wondering about sweet potato peels if these are ok to feed them. I'm sorry but I can't remember why one shouln't feed them regular pot peels. Our chickies used to follow us around like dogs. Some people even let them go in and out of their homes like dogs do, but that's a little too messy for me.

I had heard that about onions, but not garlic. Someone told me they fed their hens coconut, so their eggs have the "good" cholesterol. That sounded a little wild to me. True?

Just don't feed them onions and garlic or your eggs will taste like that. I also read no potato peels, I've given them to my hens and they didn't eat them.. so something must be up with that. I loved my hens, glad to hear you're loving having your new "girls". Enjoy!
